Your Thoughts determine your Results. To understand this, you need to understand your Minds a bit more. Yes. I said Minds. You have 2 of them. Your Conscious Mind, and your Subconscious Mind.
Your Conscious mind is your thinking rational Mind. It is responsible for your logic, reason and higher cognitive processes.
Your Subconscious Mind is your emotional mind and it has a very important Job. That job is to make sure that you are kept safe and happy. It will always do its utmost best to ensure this. And it does this by moving you away from pain, which it views as potentially dangerous, and towards pleasure.
Pain and Pleasure
Procrastination is a prime example of this. You need to do something you hate: writing that report or studying for that exam. The words you think are “I HATE doing that. It makes me SICK. What if I FAIL?” Your Subconscious Mind hears this and interprets the idea of that task as pain. Dangerous pain – something that could make you sick or suffer failure! Its job is to protect you from harm. So it moves you away from this activity which causes you pain, thereby ensuring there is no motivation to do something it has deemed to be harmful. It bases this on the information you just gave it. Instead, it then motivates you towards something you enjoy, like reading posts on my website or making a cup of coffee. Your Subconscious Mind thinks its doing a great job protecting you, but it is actually setting you up for failure.
Change your self-talk
If you want to be a doer instead of a procrastinator, you need to learn how to change your self-talk. Your Subconscious Mind then moves you towards the thing you’re procrastinating over, instead of away from it. You need to make it believe that you WANT to study or write that report or start that new business. When you learn how to do this, you bring your Subconscious Beliefs and your Conscious Desires into alignment. And that’s when the magic happens!
To do this effectively, you need to learn to communicate with your subconscious in its own language, the language of emotion. Get out of your head, stop trying to rationalize things. Instead get into how you will FEEL by achieving or doing this thing you have been procrastinating about. What you focus on EXPANDS. Focus on the feeling of the outcome and you will motivate your Subconscious Mind to move you towards it.
