What are Brainwave Frequencies?
Brainwaves are the electrical impulses produced as your brain cells (neurons) communicate with one another. They communicate by means of synchronised electrical pulses – they fire off a signal, rest, and then fire off another. The speed at which this happens determines the frequency (speed) of your brainwaves. Brainwave speed is measured in Hertz . Your brain fires its neurons off at different frequencies throughout your day. However, your brain does not operate in just one single frequency; all the frequencies are always running, all the time, except for Gamma, which is absent when you are under anesthetic. The dominant frequency determines your mental and emotional state. Changing the dominant frequency of your brain is a normal thing which happens naturally and several times throughout the day.
What is Brainwave Entrainment?
Through the use of technology your brain is provided with a specific isochronic pulse frequency which causes it to synchronise its dominant brainwave frequency to that of the one provided. This is called Brainwave Entrainment. It temporarily shifts your mental state by boosting one frequency to become dominant.
The reason you want to change the dominant frequency is because at certain levels or frequencies of the Mind, you are able to access the power of your Subconscious. These different brainwave states help you access your creativity, natural ability to heal, solve problems, and importantly, to reprogram your mind. Remember, your reality is determined by your mindset. Your state of mind determines how you feel, think and respond to the outside world. By learning to access your deeper states of consciousness you learn to access your subconscious mind and can take control of your reality.
By using brainwave entrainment, your right and left hemispheres are communicating with each other more than they have ever been able to in the past, as new neural pathways are forming to enable this communication to continue. Your brain is undergoing a powerful transformation by you consciously cycling through deeper frequency states, which will build a significant link between your conscious and subconscious mind, and expand your self-awareness. Just like physical exercise develops specific muscles, the more your brain is exercised into reaching these deeper levels of mind, the better it gets at it. As with learning any new skill, it simply requires time and repetition.
What are the different Brainwave Frequencies?
Gamma – the playground of your soul and higher-mind (38Hz upwards )
The Gamma frequencies are the fastest, and a greater presence of Gamma is associated with many spiritually oriented feelings such as an expanded consciousness, compassion, feeling blessed, bliss, and spiritual emergence. Initially the Gamma frequencies were dismissed as ‘spare brain noise’ until researchers discovered it was highly active when in the higher-mind states of universal love, altruism, and the ‘higher virtues’. It is found to increase when several areas of the brain work in harmony, high levels have been found in performing musicians, as it helps with non verbal tasks.
Gamma is the brainwave state of being “in the Zone,” often experienced by professional athletes or performers, along with a heightened sense of consciousness and intellectual acuity. Interestingly, Gamma completely disappears when under anesthesia! Be careful not to overuse your Gamma entrainments as prolonged exposure can result in irritability, anxiety and insomnia.
Beta – The playground of your conscious mind. (12Hz – 38Hz)
This frequency is dominant during your natural waking state. In this frequency you are completely aware of your surroundings, wide awake, very objective and interacting consciously with the world outside. You are alert, attentive, and involved in critical reasoning, decision making, logic, problem solving and focused mental activity. Beta brainwaves dominate our normal waking state of consciousness.
Beta is a ‘fast’ frequency and is also associated with high excitement, anxiety or stress states. Operating in a continual state of high frequency takes a tremendous amount of energy and is not a very efficient way to run the brain. Too much Beta frequency results in sleep disturbances, and high levels of stress which causes a host of health problems. Prolonged exposure to stress strengthens that pattern and frequency within your brain. Just as with your muscles, brain frequency patterns grow stronger with use, and with enough reinforcement, these patterns can become ‘locked’ into place, making it more and more difficult to return to a neutral, unstressed state. Stressed becomes your new normal! This is why it is so important to learn how to enter the lower frequencies, in order to combat mental stress and reap the health benefits of reaching states of deep physical and mental relaxation. Alpha – The place where your conscious and subconscious minds meet (8Hz – 12Hz)
The Alpha frequency is the resting state for the brain. When you are in a dominant Alpha frequency, you are in a state of relaxed wakefulness. Simply closing your eyes can drop you into Alpha. This slower frequency is responsible for the trance-like state you enter when you are daydreaming, or “zoning out”. It is more subjective, creative and intuitive than the Beta frequencies and is the gateway to your subconscious mind.
Being in an Alpha state heightens your overall imagination, visualization, mental coordination, calmness, alertness, mind/body integration and learning. Studying in an Alpha state enables super-learning as it heightens your concentration. It also puts you in the “moment of now” – a powerful mindfulness with a heightened intuition which becomes clearer and more profound as you reach the lower frequencies of Alpha. The Alpha frequency is dominant during, meditation, self hypnosis and quietly flowing thoughts. Although you naturally dip into an Alpha state during the day, the benefits of learning to purposefully access this level of mind at will are immense and can have massive powerful positive impact on your life. Theta – the playground of your subconscious mind (3Hz – 8Hz)
This is the most elusive and fleeting frequency, and yet probably the most profound and powerful in relation to you and the life you live. Your mind’s most deep-seated programs are found at the Theta level, its where you hold your “stuff” – your beliefs, history, fears and troubled memories. It is also the place where you experience exceptional insight, profound creativity and inspiration, and vivid visualizations along with experiencing and feeling your deep and raw emotions.
It is the place from which you consciously create and change your reality.
The dominant Theta frequency takes you to that wonderful twilight place on the edge of sleep, when you are either just about to drift off to sleep, or when you have just woken up but are not fully roused yet. It is also found in that all important dream state when REM sleep is taking place. It is a very powerful and subjective state to be in because in this state your mind is capable of deep and profound subconscious learning, healing and growth. While in the Theta state you are very focused on the signals originating from within your mind and your senses are withdrawn from the external world, resulting in deep insight and intuition. This makes information beyond your normal conscious awareness available to you, and is the optimal place for your mind re-programming and using the creative power of your subconscious mind.
Just a note: the bridge between Alpha and Theta – the range of 9Hz to 6Hz is affectionately known as the “Thalpha” Level. This range is associated with hyper-suggestibility of the Subconscious Minds, and is the best range to implant hypnotic suggestions. One last point of interest about the Theta Frequency, is the the specific frequency of 7.83Hz. This is known as the Schumann Frequency, and is the frequency of the earth’s magnetic field. Most paranormal experiences occur at this frequency, and it also produces the highest blood flow to the brain!
Delta – the deep subconscious mind (0.2Hz – 3Hz)
Delta brainwaves are generated in your deep dreamless sleep and the deepest states of meditation where awareness is fully detached. A Dominant Delta state is associated with a seemingly unconscious state with very little recall of memory. Delta sleep is your deepest sleep and the most difficult stage to try and wake you from. If you are woken up during Delta sleep you will be sleepy and disoriented. This slow and deeply penetrating frequency suspends external awareness while healing and regeneration are stimulated and has been found to help reduce chronic pain and anxiety. This is why that deep restorative sleep is so essential to the healing process and not getting enough of it is detrimental to your health.
